Humanoid Robot Fasteners: What We Can Learn from NASA Spaceflight Standards
Humanoid robots are moving from labs to mass production, but their joint fastener requirements are remarkably similar to aerospace hardware: ultralight, ultra-strong, ultra-reliable, and absolutely must not fail in critical positions. NASA-STD-5020 provides directly transferable design principles.
Why Robot Fasteners Resemble Aerospace Hardware
A single robot joint module may use 20–50 fasteners, all sharing these characteristics:
- Lightweight: every 100g saved improves battery life and efficiency
- Vibration resistance: walking and running create continuous cyclic loads
- Compact size: joints are tight — bolt sizes typically M3–M8
- High reliability: one loose bolt can cause joint failure or a fall
These requirements map almost 1:1 to NASA spaceflight hardware.
NASA Principles Applied to Robot Design
1. Preload must be controlled. Under-tightened bolts loosen rapidly under vibration; over-tightened bolts fatigue prematurely. NASA mandates torque-angle method over pure torque control — same for robot assembly.
2. Locking independent of preload. NASA requires every fastener to have a locking feature that doesn't depend on preload. In continuously vibrating robot joints, spring washers are insufficient — consider Spiralock threads, prevailing torque nuts, or mechanical locking.
3. Bolt yields before threads strip. Robot joints use aluminum housings with weak threads. NASA requires designing so the bolt shank fractures before internal threads strip — in aluminum, this means wire thread inserts or longer engagement.
4. Account for thermal expansion mismatch. Robot motors reach 80–100°C. Steel bolts (high CTE) and aluminum housings (even higher CTE) expand differently, changing preload. NASA requires calculating max/min preload including thermal terms.
Fastener Recommendations for Robot Joints
- Bolt grade: 12.9 alloy steel or A-286 stainless (critical joints)
- Coating: Zn-Ni flake or Dacromet (corrosion + stable friction)
- Locking: nylon insert lock nuts or micro-encapsulated thread patch
- Lightweight positions: aluminum bolts (ZT68 600MPa) where loads permit
- Aluminum housings: wire thread inserts for thread reinforcement
