The insert is a diamond-section stainless wire wound into a coil with an external thread on the outside and an internal thread on the inside. A tanged insert is driven by a tang that is notched and snapped off afterwards, and the broken tang is a foreign object that has to be controlled. A tangless insert is driven by a tool that engages the coil itself, which removes both the step and the loose piece, at the cost of a dedicated tool.
Material: SUS304 Stainless Steel. It is installed with the dedicated insert tap and its setting tool.
Where FOD control matters, tangless is the default even at higher tooling cost; where cost dominates and the assembly is cleaned afterwards, tanged inserts remain acceptable.
