A shoulder screw separates two functions: the ground shank locates, and the thread clamps. The shank is held to a close tolerance (h9 is common) for a clearance fit in the mating bore and carries radial location; the thread is smaller than the shank so it never touches the bore and only generates clamp force. Position accuracy therefore comes from the shank fit, not from the thread.
installed by shank locates in the bore, thread clamps.
Shank length should slightly exceed the clamped part thickness; too long bottoms out, too short gives insufficient location.
| Drive Type | Hex Socket |
|---|---|
| Standard | GB/T 197, customer drawing (h9 shank) |
| Head style | hex head |
| Drive | hex socket |
| Installation | shank locates in the bore, thread clamps |
| Typical substrate | hinges, pivots, locating mechanisms |
| Key inspections | shank diameter, coaxiality, squareness |
Shank diameter measured by micrometer at high sampling rate against h9.We recommend a pilot assembly at the actual torque and mating part before locking the process parameters for volume.
