The external thread of a self-tapping insert is a cutting tool. The slot does two jobs: it forms the cutting edge and it lets the barrel contract slightly, which reduces the risk of splitting a thin-walled boss. Because the slot interrupts the thread, the number of load-carrying turns is lower than on a closed-body insert of the same length.
Material: Stainless Steel / Carbon Steel. It is driven straight into the pilot hole and cuts its own thread.
Allow for the interrupted thread when choosing length, and avoid thin-walled bosses where the slot reduces the supporting section further.
