The head is where the height budget is won or lost. The large head spreads clamp force over a wider bearing area so thin plastic and thin sheet are not dented, and once the diameter grows the head has to stay low to avoid interference. A cross recess is shallower than a star recess, which suits a 0.6 mm head but transmits less torque.

A star recess needs a deeper cavity, which removes material under the recess in a very thin head. A cross recess is shallower and fits, but the torque it can transmit is lower.
