A Phillips recess transfers torque through four inclined faces, so contact is linear rather than areal and stress in the recess is higher than in a star drive. Tip size error makes it worse: oversize bottoms out in the recess, undersize contacts too far out, and both promote cam-out and raised burrs around the recess.
Material: S2 Alloy Steel. It is installed by 1/4-inch chuck on electric or pneumatic driver.
Match bit number to recess number; crossing sizes shortens the life of both bit and screw.
| Material | S2 Alloy Steel |
|---|---|
| Hardness | HRC58-62 |
| Drive | 1/4 inch hex shank |
| Sizes | PH000-PH3 |
| Standard | DIN 3126, ISO 8764 (cross recess) |
| Installation | 1/4-inch chuck on electric or pneumatic driver |
| Typical substrate | cross recess screws |
| Key inspections | tip dimensions, hardness, torque to fracture |
Tip thickness and width are checked on a profile projector against the PH standard. We recommend a pilot assembly at the actual torque and mating part before locking the process parameters for volume.
